Incineration ash containing chromium(VI) is produced by the oxidation of chromium-containing waste components and corrosion products from the stainless steel grate alloys.

 

In the presence of excess oxygen, Cr(III) compounds react at high temperatures with, amongst other things, calcium, sodium or potassium compounds from the waste material to form chromates, which then mix with grate, boiler and filter ash.

Both when the doors are opened briefly, and particularly during inspections, the ash and the chromium(VI) compounds it contains can be dispersed uncontrollably and may also contaminate areas surrounding the furnace.

The dust, which is merely perceived as ash, poses a respiratory and dermal hazard to humans and the environment, as the dust settles on clothing and under footwear and can thus be unintentionally carried away, in some cases even into employees’ private lives.
